A safe assumption is that any organization can benefit from implementing a training program. However, will virtually every situation be improved with training? The ideal situation for training to be most effective is when employees have the proper attitude, but job knowledge is inadequate. Upon assessing your employees, consider the following scenarios when determining who may benefit the most. Positive attitude with limited job knowledge:
  • Training will have maximum results for this employee who is likely a new hire or striving for the “next level”.
  • Capitalize on the employee’s excitement and enthusiasm as they adjust to their new position.
Positive attitude with extensive job knowledge:
  • Training can assist with employee’s professional development.
  • Learning new information can energize a seasoned employee.
Negative attitude with limited job knowledge:
  • Training is not likely to help, due to employee disinterest.
  • Consider reassigning this employee to an alternate position assessing the reasons for the attitude-based barriers.
Negative attitude with extensive job knowledge:
  • Training is not the answer with this employee.
  • Consider addressing performance issues and work to resolve them.
Every employee should have the benefit of training extended to them. However, as a manager, use your payroll dollars wisely and apply training approaches where you will achieve the best results. Watch for new postings on workforce strategy here on our blog, as well as FacebookLinkedIn, and Twitter.
