Once you've mastered how to create a favorable interviewing environment, ask thought-provoking questions, answer any difficult questions from the applicant, and watch for questionable behaviors during the interview, you can now tie the whole interview process together. The entire interview can be summarized in three simple stages, also known as the three “E’s”: Enlighten, Excite, and Exit.
  • Enlighten – enlighten the applicant about primary job requirements, your performance expectations, scheduling, and the advantages and common challenges of the position.
  • Excite – get the applicant excited about working for your organization by outlining the many benefits available to them; overview a life at your organization on a day-to-day basis; gather information about the applicant’s employment history by asking open-ended questions.
  • Exit – conclude the interview by discussing the next step[s] of the process [reference checks, second interview, etc.]; establish a means of future contact and firmly shake applicant’s hand; thank them for their time and interest in your organization and the position.
